Las sociedades: el tercer tipoSocieties: the third type
Un ser hecho de seres que no lo conocenA being made of beings that do not know it
Society is born from the interactions between individuals and acts back upon them: it is a being of the third type, unfinished and open.
De dónde viene: el descubrimiento de las sociedades animalesWhere it comes from: the discovery of animal societies
Critica a Wilson por reducir lo social a lo genético (p. 277), y a Chauvin le toma la imagen del hormiguero como cerebro (p. 280).Until recently society was seen only in humans and, as an oddity, in ants, termites and bees. Morin records the shift: social organization is original (Rabaud, Grassé), ancient (Chauchard), widespread (Wilson) and has its own evolution (Moscovici). He criticizes Wilson for reducing the social to the genetic (p. 277), and from Chauvin he takes the image of the anthill as a brain (p. 280).
Para el Estado toma la «megamáquina social» de Mumford y la institución imaginaria de Castoriadis; para la nación, a Michelet y a Renan (pp. 289–292).For communication between subjects he starts from the limits of Shannon, who only knows abstract senders and receivers, and draws on Bateson and Watzlawick (pp. 239–241). For the State he takes Mumford's «social megamachine» and Castoriadis's imaginary institution; for the nation, Michelet and Renan (pp. 289–292).
Comunicación y comuniónCommunication and communion
Between members of a species more than information circulates: each recognizes in the other a stranger and a fellow, an ego alter and an alter ego. When identity prevails, communication becomes communion, and if the loop lasts a community is born. Solidarity, Morin says, cannot be reduced to the calculation of genes.
Insectos y mamíferosInsects and mammals
There are two variants of animal society. That of ants, termites and bees is almost an organism: castes, an egg-laying queen, a brain distributed among thousands of heads. That of birds and mammals is open and conflictual: rivalries, dominance, alliances. Precisely because it is unfinished, it lets the individuality of its members grow.
Cultura, Estado, naciónCulture, State, nation
The full third type is born with humans. Culture works as a social genos: it is learned and passed on, and comes to regulate biological reproduction, for instance through the incest taboo. Then comes the State, a central apparatus that computes and commands, and finally the nation, which its members experience as a motherland.
Hexagonal cells among which individuals move: none of them directs the comb, yet from their coming and going a form emerges that contains and orders them.
Cotidiano · la madre patriaEveryday · the motherland
Nobody has ever seen a nation, yet people sing to it, love it and die for it. Morin explains that the myth of the motherland fuses paternal authority and maternal love, and extends the fraternity of the tribe to millions of strangers. That is why he says it is more real than reality.
A mere gathering can turn into a rudimentary society. When locusts exceed a fairly low density, perhaps three hundred per hectare, they harden their shells, change their greenish colour for a uniform yellow-grey, adopt stereotyped behaviour and become voracious. The whole acts back on the individuals and transforms them.
In 1980 Morin warned that computing could decentralize communication, but also give the State the power to gather all the information about each individual, in more detail than the brain has about our cells. Added to the welfare State, both cocoon and trap, he saw in this the temptation of an all-powerful third type.
Tres confusionesThree confusions
No es un superorganismoIt is not a superorganism
Morin no identifica sociedad y organismo. Morin does not identify society with organism. The cells of an organism come from a single egg and obey; the members of a society have different parents, a head of their own and great autonomy. That is why society presupposes a very high individuality in its members and tolerates disorders no organism would tolerate.
No es un ecosistemaIt is not an ecosystem
The ecosystem sustains itself, but it has no shared identity, no fraternal community, no self-reference. Society does: it is sociocentric, defends itself against the foreign, and each member carries it at the heart of their egocentrism. Even so, every society keeps a quasi-ecological share of competition and conflict.
No es una suma de individuosIt is not a sum of individuals
Society does not sit above the interactions: it is made of them. But those interactions form a system with emergent qualities that organizes and controls its own reproduction, through the individuals who are born and die. It is a machine-being that produces itself.
Society is not superimposed on the interactions between individual-subjects, since it is the interactions that constitute it. Yet it is something other than the sum of these interactions, since these interactions produce a social system, that is, an organizing whole that acts back on its constituents.Edgar Morin · El Método 2, p. 279Edgar Morin · Method 2, p. 279 (free translation)
It comes in the section on the order of society, right after the examples of locusts and insect castes. Morin is looking for the moment when a gathering of animals becomes a society, and immediately asks whether that social being has individuality and the quality of a subject.
Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable
Morin claims the nation-State is an individual-subject of its own type, with a genos (culture, laws) and an apparatus occupying the place of computation. For many sociologists, attributing subjectivity to a nation is a dangerous metaphor. He replies that the danger lies in not seeing it: that subject subjugates us with our own substance.
At the end of the volume, Morin writes that the encounters of the third kind will not be with aliens but with the societal Beings we belong to. If the whole is more than the parts, why not hand it the future? His answer is that the truth of totality is not totalitarian.
Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today
Biology today studies the collective intelligence of ants, bees and flocks, and engineering imitates it in robot swarms and distributed algorithms. Morin adds a warning that is often missing: those collectives work well because their members give up much of their autonomy.
His 1980 concern about State computing is read today under other names: big data, surveillance, platforms that know each user. This capsule invites us to ask not only who holds the data, but what kind of social whole is being formed with them.
