Every living being combines head, network and swarm: hierarchy is one dimension of organization, not organization itself.

De dónde viene: palabras que viajan entre la sociedad y la biologíaWhere it comes from: words that travel between society and biology

Contra el esquema que une centro, pirámide y división del trabajo, y que la cibernética y el sistemismo canonizaron, propone hacer circular conscientemente esos conceptos entre lo biológico y lo social (pp. 353–355).Morin notes that work, specialization and hierarchy were born in social experience, moved into physics and biology, and return to sociology as if they were natural. Against the scheme that joins centre, pyramid and division of labour, canonized by cybernetics and systems thinking, he proposes making these concepts circulate consciously between the biological and the social (pp. 353–355).

He draws on Uriel's cellular retro-differentiation, MacLean's triune brain, Changeux and Danchin's random synapses and, from Jacob, the idea of bricolage (pp. 357–376).

Hierarchy is at once an architecture of emergences and a structure of subjugation. From the bottom up, each level produces new qualities that become the base for the next: atom, molecule, cell, organism. From the top down, the whole controls, inhibits and exploits the parts. Morin sums it up: it is not only the pyramid that collapses, it is also the tree that rises.

Centro, policentro, acentroCentre, polycentre, acentre

A central command apparatus is a special case, not the rule. Plants, starfish, anthills and ecosystems are acentric and polycentric: the centre is everywhere and nowhere. In the hive, the queen lays eggs and does not govern. Even our brain, the central organ par excellence, is polycentric, and its neocortex is an almost anarchic tissue.

For Morin, anarchy is not disorder from a lack of authority: it is the organization that arises from the interactions between computing beings, with no higher command. It comes first in life: the first cell, organisms and every embryo are born from centreless interactions. An organism produces itself anarchically while it organizes itself hierarchically.

A hierarchical tree dissolves into a network, the network scatters into free points and the points form the tree again: life keeps passing through all three forms.

Whoever dances on Saturday night enjoys it in and for themselves. But that dance is also an institution that serves society as relaxation, escape and integration. Every day you earn a living for yourself and, in doing so, you are a cog in the economic machine: you live for yourself and for the whole at once.

If a hive lacks foragers, the workers change jobs and their salivary glands atrophy. If the hive loses workers or a section is destroyed, the old workers reactivate those glands and re-specialize. Specialization is not the essence of a living being: it keeps competences it can recover when needed.

Social · el imperio decapitadoSocial · the beheaded empire

An organization with a single head decides quickly, but beheading it is enough for everything to die: a small band of conquerors beheaded the Inca empire. Polycentric organizations have spare heads, like the Hydra facing Hercules, and against a more numerous enemy the centralized army must give way to the guerrilla.

En sus palabrasIn his words
“
Let us not forget that our body is first of all a republic of thirty billion cells that has produced its hierarchies, and not a hierarchy that has produced its body.
Edgar Morin · El Método 2, p. 366Edgar Morin · Method 2, p. 366 (free translation)

Pertenece a «La insuficiencia jerárquica». It belongs to «The insufficiency of hierarchy». Morin has just shown that life is born from centreless interactions, from the first cell to every embryo, and concludes that there is a necessary anarchic component that produces, offsets and corrects the hierarchical component.

Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable

Morin distrusts every utopia that promises a society without conflict or disorder: he calls it the demented dream of an ideologue or technocrat. But he also rejects the purely anarchist answer, because we are vertebrates with a head. What remains is an aporia he himself acknowledges: how to have conflicts without their producing domination.

He suggests that every leap to a larger scale is paid for first with organizational poverty: the first multicellular beings were less complex than the cell, and the first empires crushed the clans. If he is right, our societies would still be at a barbaric stage. It is a hypothesis as suggestive as it is hard to test.

Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today

Management today talks about flat organizations, autonomous teams and rotating leadership. Morin already quoted, in a note, the image of migrating birds taking turns at the head. But he warned that correcting excesses is not enough: we must ask whether the pyramid model is still the one taken for granted.

The internet, free software and distributed networks show that order can be produced without a centre. They also show that de facto hierarchies reappear in those networks, as Morin says of interactions between unequal beings. This capsule helps to see both things at once.
