RE: del prefijo al paradigmaRE: from prefix to paradigm
Lo vivo no dura: recomienza a cada instanteThe living does not last: it begins again at every instant
What looks stable in a living being is a frantic labour of beginning again: permanence is the return of the precarious.
De dónde viene: un prefijo que estaba en todas partesWhere it comes from: a prefix that was everywhere
Morin starts from what Method 1 said about machine-beings that organize themselves by reorganizing, and asks what lies in that root. With Gaston Richard he concludes that RE only gains meaning in autos and oikos, and that these only exist because they regenerate (pp. 387–388).
The chapter discusses two impoverishing readings of repetition. One is the Eternal Return, which Morin had already excluded along with perpetual motion. The other is Freud's, who, starting from his theory of neuroses, tied repetition to the death drive (pp. 396–399). He also takes up Lwoff's living order and information theory, for which the new can only be inscribed on redundancy (pp. 390, 396).
Repetition is the most general form of RE: replication, duplication, cycle, feedback, return to genetic memory. Recursion is its richest form: a process whose products are necessary to produce it. That is why the living loop does not just go round in circles: it builds. Self-organization generates the reorganization that, in turn, regenerates the organization.
Retro y metaRetro and meta
Every living RE goes back to the past and catapults it toward the future. An instinctive act is a memory coming to life without the individual remembering it: much of our lives is made of memories without remembrance. And in that resurrection of the past, renewal appears. Past and future are not lined up: they circulate within one another inside the present.
The living return never comes back to the same point. No two bacteria, two lizards or two elephants are identical, and the Earth, which turns exactly on itself, is never in the same place in the universe. The cycle shifts on each turn: that is how RE welcomes innovation, integrates it and in turn makes it repetition.
A circle is drawn over and over, but each turn lands slightly shifted and the sum traces a spiral: the living return repeats without ever coming back to the same place.
Your body looks like a stable thing that lasts for decades. Yet every heartbeat and every breath is both nourishment and detoxification: without them it would begin to decompose beyond repair. Your red blood cells live about a hundred and twenty days, and from one birthday to the next you renew almost all your molecules. What you call your body remakes itself without pause.
Biológico · el disco rayadoBiological · the scratched record
A genetic defect is passed on to the offspring until it disperses; a trauma keeps coming back to wound the present. Morin compares this block to a scratched record that prevents spiral development. It is repetition that has lost its meta: the part of the truth Freud saw, turned into the whole truth.
A revolution that does not regenerate itself from its own sources seeks support in the darkest foundations of the old order and ends up consolidating it. That is why, Morin says, the old order devours revolutions that lack self-regenerating virtues. The new must inscribe itself in the old without being reabsorbed: transform the orbit of RE, not destroy it.
Tres confusionesThree confusions
No es copia en serieIt is not mass copying
Artificial machines repeat: they make the same thing after a prototype, as the press multiplies a message. But they do not repair or reproduce themselves; humans remake them. They have the RE of effects, never the RE that regenerates being. There lies, for Morin, the gulf between nature and artefact.
No es Eterno RetornoIt is not Eternal Return
The cosmos may know new beginnings, but no universe would exactly repeat the previous one. Morin says it with humour: you, the reader, are not one of billions of other yous reading the same book in each cycle. You remain unique. Living time is rotary within an irreversible time.
No es pulsión de muerteIt is not the death drive
Every life feeds its death as it feeds itself, but that death is a by-product of RE, not its goal. Living repetition is, on the contrary, the survival drive of all development. Only when computation is blocked and cannot invent a strategy does repetition become compulsion and failure.
Invariance is the product of an uninterrupted dynamic, the state of rest is the product of frantic work, continuity is built out of the discontinuity of ephemeral individualities, what lasts is founded on the return of the precarious.Edgar Morin · El Método 2, p. 390Edgar Morin · Method 2, p. 390 (free translation)
Morin has just described the whirlwinds of renewal of molecules, cells and individuals, and explains why, despite it all, we see fixity and laws. It is an optical illusion: regenerating repetition gives the observer the impression of an invariant order standing above the very agitations that feed it.
Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable
If everything that lasts is beginning again, nothing is guaranteed: not the body, not an institution, not an idea. The stability you took for granted is work that someone, or something, does without rest. This capsule takes away the comfort of the solid and leaves you the task of regenerating what you want to keep alive.
Morin corrects Freud sharply: repetition is not failure but survival. Yet he also admits the scratched record, the wound that returns. How can you tell from inside a cycle that regenerates you from one that locks you in? The book gives the criterion, the spiral, but not the recipe for recognizing it in time.
Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today
Cell biology today speaks of protein turnover, autophagy and DNA repair as continuous processes, and the idea that the organism is a flow that keeps a form is almost commonplace. Morin asked for something more: to see that repetition as the source of being, not mere technical maintenance.
Organizations and social movements keep facing the chapter's dilemma: innovating without regenerating leads to leaning on the old, and conserving without renewal leads to death. Talking about reinvention or resilience is easy; the hard part is what Morin asks, that the new find within itself its sources of beginning again.
