Life is one at its base and at its summit, but in between it keeps bursting into pieces that fight each other.

De dónde viene: una revolución que no sabe lo que descubrióWhere it comes from: a revolution that does not know what it found

It showed that the originality of life lies in its organization, wrote chance into its laws and reached the idea of the self; but its pioneers, such as Monod, Jacob and Lwoff, remained guided by the reductive spirit. Hence a double discourse: it forgets at the level of foundations what it demonstrates at the level of functioning (pp. 413–416).

The chapter opens with epigraphs from Weaver, Dobzhansky, Hegel, Zadeh, von Foerster and Bachelard (p. 412). Morin argues with Thom, for whom the struggle of opposites is a simple principle, and cites von Neumann on error and the logic of natural automata, Bateson on noise, Bohr on measuring the organism and Zadeh on vagueness (pp. 422–440).

Complejo no es complicadoComplex is not complicated

Complication is the tangle of countless interactions, and it can obey simple rules, like the genetic code. If there were only complication, life would be tangled and simple at once. Complexity reaches the bottom: the logic of organization, the principle of being, the existence of the smallest single cell. The complex is what is woven together: organized diversity.

Bios y PolemosBios and Polemos

What is organized is not conflict-free harmony. Predation, parasitism, sexual rivalry and social conflict are constituents of life, not faults. Antagonism and complementarity are two poles of one phenomenon, and antagonisms regulate, sustain autonomies and produce forms. But conflict remains conflict: what opposes unites, what unites opposes.

Desorden, azar, errorDisorder, chance, error

Life produces disorder as it produces complexity, and it tolerates it, rejects it, integrates it and uses it. Chance is in its origin, in mutation and in the sexual lottery. Error is its Achilles' heel, yet living organization works with it: it resists it, corrects it, learns from it and sometimes transmutes it into novelty.

Two populations, prey and predators, rise and fall out of phase in a cycle that never ends: each lives by opposing the other, and from that struggle comes an order neither produces alone.

Tres terrenosThree grounds

Donde lo vivo trabaja con lo que lo amenazaWhere the living works with what threatens it

Cotidiano · tu sexoEveryday · your sex

It looks like the clearest label you have. Yet sex involves distinct levels —chromosomal, gonadal, hormonal, anatomical, psychological— that do not reduce to one another and may not coincide. Moreover, each individual keeps traits of the other sex in body and behaviour. That is why Morin treats it as a macroconcept, not as a clear and distinct essence.

Von Neumann reckoned that if every error had to be caught and corrected, an organism would not work for a thousandth of a second. Life tolerates error, resists it with redundancy and repairs damaged DNA. And a mutation, a copying error, can become the truth of a new hereditary message if it produces a viable organization.

Morin notes that theories complex at the outset, such as Marxism or systemism, did not live up to their demands and fell into new simplifications. And he confesses that his own fight was also against his simplifications disguised as complexity. Complex thought lives, like everything living, at the temperature of its own destruction.

En sus palabrasIn his words
“
Contrary to the classical idea in which everything organized is order, harmony, functionality, and is therefore marked by the absence of internal conflicts, the world of living organization intrinsically involves competition, antagonisms and conflicts: Bios contains Polemos.
Edgar Morin · El Método 2, p. 421Edgar Morin · Method 2, p. 421 (free translation)

It opens the section «Bios and polemos», right after stating that the problem of complex thought is to think the unity and disunity of life together. Morin gathers here what Darwin, ecology, ethology and sociobiology had seen separately: competition is not only deadly, it is also vital.

TensionesTensions

Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable

If conflict is constitutive of life, the temptation is to justify any violence as natural. Morin blocks it: conflict remains conflict even when it organizes, and does not dissolve into functional harmony. But the reader is left without the comfort of a reconciled world and without the excuse of a struggle that explains everything.

Morin admits that his paradigm does not explain life: it only guides the discourse that will try to explain it. And he acknowledges that the paradigm of complexity cannot yet be born because that of simplification cannot yet die. To anyone wanting results, that sounds like an unkept promise; for Morin, it is the minimum honesty of an adventure.

Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today

Systems biology, network ecology and the study of cellular robustness now work with redundancy, noise and error tolerance as functional traits. Zadeh's fuzzy logic, which Morin cited as a vanguard, became an everyday engineering tool. What remains open is his deeper question: what logic does the living call for.

In team and crisis management people talk of learning from error and living with uncertainty. This capsule recalls Morin's other side: tolerating disorder is not enough; one must keep a logical demand greater than that of simplifying thought, without falling into confusion.
