No living being asked to live and every living being wants to live: living is being reborn against death, and thanks to it.

De dónde viene: Bichat contra Atlan, y los dos a la vezWhere it comes from: Bichat against Atlan, and both at once

Bichat, at the beginning of the nineteenth century: life is the set of functions that resist death. Henri Atlan, in 1979: life is the set of functions capable of using death. Far from choosing, he joins them as complementary and antagonistic, with support from Simmel, Simondon and Salk (pp. 458–459).

To think about existence, Morin rejects the philosophical Dasein thrown into the world without calculation and ties it to computation (p. 462). From von Neumann and Morgenstern he takes the idea of game, from Caillois its four forms, from Valéry the suspicion about a goal of life, and he disputes the hidden purpose proposed by Sauvan (pp. 465–470).

Nacer y morirBeing born and dying

Being born is escaping by luck the hecatomb of lost seeds and gametes, and it is a mystery: as a subject, the newborn arises from nothing. Dying is necessary and comes by five routes: the outside, the heat and toxins the body itself produces, error, a genetic clock and the fragility of complexity itself.

Existing is lack and need, but no living being exists without calculating: synthesizing a protein, receiving a signal, fleeing. Even the plant and the anthill produce an intelligence without a brain. And since all calculation is short-sighted, existing means being in play against the environment, trying to make as few errors as possible. Error lurks behind every chance.

Vivir para vivirLiving for living

One lives to enjoy, to survive, to give life and help others live, and these ends become means for one another in a circuit without a summit. There is no ultimate goal of life, and seeking one impoverishes. That is why Morin accepts the apparent tautology living for living: purpose is immanent, multiple, fragile, and in that lack of an end lies its richness.

Donde vivir es renacerWhere living is being reborn

Cotidiano · descansarEveryday · resting

You think resting is doing nothing, but rest demands energy recharge and reorganization without pause. Animals spend energy to find energy and bustle about in order to rest. In the most complex ones the circuit reverses: one also sleeps in order to bustle, and activity becomes an end. A child is soothed by rocking: light excitement and calming.

Piaget marvelled that the leaf does not die by necrosis but by abscission: it detaches and falls. There are species whose death seems programmed; many insects die right after reproducing, and in humans ageing follows a kind of clock, visible in twins. It is death that comes from the prior of the inside.

Social · la finalidad de Wall StreetSocial · the purpose of Wall Street

Reducing the end of life to improving genes through natural selection would be as poor, Morin says, as reducing a society's economic purpose to the rise of shares on Wall Street. Every rationalization of a single end impoverishes, by eliminating ends or lowering them to means, and leads to absurdity by giving life a narrow meaning.

“
Because it dies ceaselessly, life is permanent rebirth. Because it is ceaselessly reborn, life is nature, in the literal sense of the word: what is always being born.
Edgar Morin · El Método 2, p. 459Edgar Morin · Method 2, p. 459 (free translation)

It is in the section «The reprieve and the sursum», after Atlan's principle. Morin has just quoted Simondon and Salk on life always at the edge of its limit, and returns to the Bob Dylan line in the epigraph: he who is not busy being born is busy dying, and he who is not dying is being reborn.

Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable

Morin offers no comfort: life is not only dialectical but tragic, and existence has no happy ending. Death can be diluted into the species or the biosphere, but millions of species have died and the biosphere will die too. Death opens in life a breach no reason can close, and he refuses to cover it.

If there is no goal of life, how do you orient yours? Morin answers that suppressing the unreason of living suppresses the reasons for living, but offers no substitute. He leaves the reader in a circuit of ends turning into means, with no summit. For some that is liberation; for others, exposure.

Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today

Biology today studies programmed cell death, senescence and the cell's internal recycling as parts of life itself, along the lines of Atlan's principle. And ecology shows how every death feeds soil cycles. What Morin adds is that, for the individual, that death remains a total loss.

Cultures of self-optimization measure sleep, steps and productivity as if there were an optimal life. This capsule recalls that living cannot be optimized: ends change, compete and are born, and optimizing for old ends can smother new ones. Measuring helps; believing that this is living impoverishes.
