Selección e integraciónSelection and integration
What integrates selects and what is selected integrates: to adapt is to enter a loop, not to fit a mould.
De dónde viene: Darwin sin ecosistemaWhere it comes from: Darwin without the ecosystem
La teoría sintética la volvió luego un saldo estadístico de nacimientos sobre muertes (p. 72).Darwin rightly saw that selection presupposes differences from individual to individual, but he centred it on struggle and ignored the idea of ecosystem. That is why, Morin says, selection was left hanging in the air, referred to a phantom nature acting like a cattle breeder (p. 70). The synthetic theory then turned it into a statistical surplus of births over deaths (p. 72).
Morin adds Tasdjian, for whom the organism also selects its environment (p. 71), and a letter from Gaston Richard: eco-organizational integration is the meta-principle of selection (p. 71). At the end he sets Rousseau's nature against that of struggle-driven Darwinism (p. 78).
What is rich is adaptivity, the ability to adapt again and differently. And the arrow turns around: the beaver adapts the river with its dams, the ruminant makes the meadow, the salmon adopts another environment (pp. 67–68).
Lo seleccionado y lo seleccionanteThe selected and the selecting
The biosphere selected the virus and the elephant, the strong and the weak, the conformist and the non-conformist. There is no single principle but a meta-principle: eco-integration. What is selected is not just an individual or some genes, but an individual/population/species cycle; what selects is the great loops of the ecosystem (pp. 71–74).
What is eliminated is what cannot become complementary. The parasite that destroys all its hosts disappears with them; so does the hyper-specialized organism that no longer fits the new forms of the ecosystem. Solidarity, swept away by the ferocious version of Darwinism, returns as a main phenomenon of selection (p. 73).
Particles fall onto a sieve whose holes keep changing shape; some pass, others stay and are integrated below, and what is integrated redraws the sieve: selection and integration shape each other.
Many species, rather than adapting to a change of climate, prefer to adopt another environment, permanently or seasonally: eels, salmon, caribou, storks, swallows. Adaptation becomes adoption. When you watch a flock pass in autumn, you are watching living beings choose their environment instead of submitting to it (pp. 67–68).
Biológico · los primos eliminadosBiological · the eliminated cousins
Estar adaptado no basta; hay que estarlo también a la competencia (p. 69).Australanthropines, homo habilis, homo erectus and the Neanderthals lasted hundreds of thousands or millions of years, longer than homo sapiens so far. They did not vanish for lack of adaptation: they were eliminated by the arrival of a competitor and hunter superior in strategy. Being adapted is not enough; one must also be adapted to competition (p. 69).
Es simbiosis, no solo elección (pp. 38, 70).The breeder's selection served as the model for natural selection, and Morin criticizes that nature imagined as an anthropomorphic breeder. Domestication itself teaches something else: cultivated plants lost their resistance and can no longer do without their growers, who in turn cannot do without them. It is symbiosis, not just choice (pp. 38, 70).
Tres confusionesThree confusions
No es la supervivencia del más aptoIt is not the survival of the fittest
The biosphere did not select only the strong: it also selected the weak, the fragile, the clumsy. Many beings have shortcomings, and those shortcomings push them to associate. What survives is what fits into viable complementarities, not the isolated optimum (pp. 71–73).
No es una elección definitivaIt is not a final choice
La nuestra no es excepción (pp. 71, 75).Ninety-nine per cent of the species that preceded today's vanished after having been selected for a long time. All selection is temporary and turns into its opposite, because the rules of selection change as the ecosystem evolves. Ours is no exception (pp. 71, 75).
No es la astucia de la razónIt is not the cunning of reason
In Hegel, selfish action unknowingly serves the general interest into which it is wholly integrated. Morin asks for something more uncomfortable: the particular interest works both for and against the general interest, and that antagonism is itself part of the general interest (p. 80).
Selection and integration have become recursively linked concepts in which the product of integration in turn selects what it integrates, while the product of selection in turn integrates what selects it.Edgar Morin · El Método 2, p. 75Edgar Morin · Method 2, p. 75 (free translation)
It comes at the end of the analysis of selection, after showing that everything selected is also selecting and that the ecosystem selects itself. Here Morin replaces the simplifying pair of competition and selection with a loop: integration and selection produce each other, and the loop itself changes with evolution.
Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable
Morin asks us to look binocularly at nature's goodness and cruelty. The great solidarity is woven of servitude, exploitation and death: «every proliferation of life is a holocaust to death». There is no romantic comfort and no Darwinian cynicism; both faces must be held at once, and that is tiring.
If selection depends on shifting loops and a great deal of chance, predictive power is lost: no one can say in advance what will survive. For a biology seeking laws, calling selection an ambiguous, open and recursive macroconcept may sound like giving up. Morin presents it as faithfulness to the real.
Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today
Today's evolutionary biology debates niche construction, neutral drift and multilevel selection. These questions are close to Morin's: the organism modifies its environment, not every trait is useful and what is selected is not just a gene. His vocabulary was different; the intuition is shared.
Companies and schools keep repeating that you must adapt or die. This capsule offers another reading: perfect adaptation to a stable environment is the most fragile, and what lasts is the ability to readapt, to transform the environment and to weave complementarities.
