Auto-eco: la autonomía dependienteAuto-eco: dependent autonomy
Ser libre gracias a lo que te ataFree thanks to what binds you
The more autonomous a being is, the more it depends on its environment: freedom feeds on dependencies.
De dónde viene: el holón y el efecto JanoWhere it comes from: the holon and the Janus effect
Retoma a Ryback, para quien el fenotipo es ecogenético (p. 82), y a Jacques Sauvan, que ve el ecosistema como una máquina de enseñar (p. 84).Morin starts from Claude Bernard, quoted at the gateway to ecology: «the conditions of life lie neither in the organism nor in the external milieu, but in both at once» (p. 32). He takes up Ryback, for whom the phenotype is ecogenetic (p. 82), and Jacques Sauvan, who sees the ecosystem as a teaching machine (p. 84).
En la segunda parte del libro extiende la idea a la integración de células, individuos y sociedades (pp. 304–307).From Koestler he takes the holon and its Janus effect: each holon tends to assert its individuality and to function as part of a vaster whole (p. 89). He finds it insufficient and goes further: autos and oikos form a one-and-double entity. In the second part of the book he extends the idea to the integration of cells, individuals and societies (pp. 304–307).
La eco-organización coprograma (pp. 83–84).The plant has an internal clock, yet it germinates and flowers when variations of light, temperature and humidity tell it the real time of the season. As in a spy novel, the message only takes shape when the two halves of the banknote are joined: the genetic code and the signals of the environment. Eco-organization co-programmes (pp. 83–84).
Pero los seres complejos también necesitan afecto: agresión y ternura a la vez (pp. 84–86).The environment does not give information; it gives the conditions for extracting it. The uncertain and the ambiguous stimulate attention, curiosity and strategy: they foster intelligence more than certainty does. That is why the ecosystem is a school that teaches one to know by oneself. But complex beings also need affection: aggression and tenderness at once (pp. 84–86).
Autos y oikos se oponen y se implican: no pueden pensarse por separado (pp. 87–89).Autonomy and dependence are not opposites that subtract from each other: they grow together. A more autonomous being is more complex, and that complexity demands more complexity from the environment. All freedom depends on the conditions of its formation and, once emerged, acts back on them. Autos and oikos oppose and imply each other: they cannot be thought apart (pp. 87–89).
An inner shape and an outer ring deform together while the shape takes in particles from outside: the autos makes itself with what the oikos gives it, and transforms it in the taking.
Donde el entorno te hace por dentroWhere the environment makes you from within
Cotidiano · el pájaro y su pollueloEveryday · the bird and its chick
Un mismo gesto es poliorganizacional (p. 306).When a bird feeds its chick in the nest, that single act is a moment in five loops: the reproductive cycle of the species, the couple and the family, the chick's ontogenesis, the regulation between predators and insects, and the food cycles of the ecosystem. One and the same gesture is poly-organizational (p. 306).
Biológico · el gatito que no veBiological · the kitten that cannot see
In mice raised in a stimulus-poor environment, dendritic spines hardly appear. A kitten that receives no visual stimuli until twenty-one days old stays blind. In mammals, the brain finishes forming with events from outside: the environment takes an intimate part in building the individual (p. 85).
Morin ve allí un rasgo general: los seres complejos necesitan perturbaciones, riesgos y pruebas para desarrollarse (p. 85).Archaic societies ritualized the passage to adulthood with trials of body and spirit. In ours, collective initiation breaks down and gives way to an individual, random initiation. Morin sees a general feature here: complex beings need disturbances, risks and trials in order to develop (p. 85).
Tres confusionesThree confusions
No es determinismo del medioIt is not environmental determinism
La relación es de alienación mutua, no de servidumbre unívoca (pp. 83, 89–90).The environment does not manufacture the living being from outside or mould it like clay. The autos has its own auto-logic pursuing egocentric ends, sometimes against everything. The ecosystem co-organizes, co-programmes and teaches; it does not command. The relation is one of mutual alienation, not one-way servitude (pp. 83, 89–90).
No es autosuficienciaIt is not self-sufficiency
A being closed in on itself would die. To organize its autonomy it needs closure and, at the same time, openness to an environment from which it takes energy, organized complexity and co-organization. That is why Morin says the living being cannot be thought of as a closed object or as a closed subject (p. 88).
Distinción e integración se mantienen juntas (pp. 88–89).The model of the part slotted into the whole hides the distinction between the individual and its ecosystem. The ecosystem is not the ecosystem minus the individuals, but with them; the individual is not the individual minus the ecosystem, but with it. Distinction and integration are held together (pp. 88–89).
Independence grows at the same time as dependence. The more autonomous a being becomes, the more complex it is, the more this complexity depends on the eco-organizing complexities that nourish it.Edgar Morin · El Método 2, p. 87Edgar Morin · Method 2, p. 87 (free translation)
It is one of the five principles of the auto-ecological relation that Morin lists as he closes chapter III, after the principles of bio-thanatic inscription and of eco-auto-organization. It sums up what the school of life has just shown with mice, kittens and children: individual complexity feeds on ecological complexity.
Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable
Where does the self of an individual marked by everything it has met begin? If the environment takes part in your formation, there is no pure self that can be isolated by subtraction. Morin leaves the border vague and uncertain. For anyone who thinks of identity as an essence, that shared zone is unsettling.
Morin acknowledges a great inequality of autonomies in nature, born of unequal evolutions and conditions, but holds that it does not cancel reciprocity: the ecosystem gives the frailest creature a vital minimum of autonomy. Transposed to society, the argument could serve to justify inequalities, and the note does not enter that ground.
Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today
Epigenetics and developmental biology confirm that the environment modulates gene expression and brain formation. Childhood neuroscience insists that the affective bond is as necessary as stimulation. Morin's formula, aggression and affection, fits those findings well.
Research on the microbiome shows that huge populations of microbes live in us and take part in digestion and immunity: the eco-being lives inside the body. This capsule invites us to stop thinking of autonomy as isolation and to care for it as a well-woven web of dependencies.
